E3 partner communities in Zambia – context at a glance:

  • Partner communities in Kabwe, Kitwe and Ndola.

  • Limited opportunities to earn a living: E3 partners are improving livelihoods in communities where people face extreme poverty.

  • High rates of HIV infection: it was estimated by UNAIDS that the HIV prevalence rate was 9.8% in 2023, 1.3 million Zambians were living with HIV and 23,000 new infections occurred. HIV education is key to reduce the spread of HIV and ensure people can live positively with the disease.

  • Improvements to people knowing their status and accessing medication: 96% of people living with HIV know their status and 95% are on antiretroviral treatment. With proper care, medication and nutritious food, those living with HIV can lead healthy, productive lives well into old age.

  • Importance of improving life for young people: 53% of Zambia’s population is 18 years and younger.

  • Challenges for boys and girls in completing school: E3 partners are working to encourage and enable children to complete their education. There are 390,000 orphans due to AIDS (aged 0 to 17).

  • Gender-based violence: 25% of 15-49 year old women report recent intimate partner violence. E3 supports partners to raise awareness and support abuse survivors.
