Quality care and education is vital so children have a solid foundation. Families face abject poverty, chronic hunger, inadequate housing, lack of income and low living standards. The effects of poverty can be devastating to child development, including illnesses, chronic malnutrition, slow cognitive development and academic failures.

The preschool in a township in East London, South Africa, will care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, helping them learn the basic principles of life, Christian values and develop the skills needed to break the cycle of poverty and succeed when they start school. Local parents and guardians trust that this preschool will care for and safeguard their children and they want them to learn in a Christian setting.

Staff have received government accredited training in early years education. The preschool cares about each child and ensures that those who live further away have transport to and from preschool. Priority is given to orphaned and vulnerable children, some of whom have special needs, including ADHD and Cerebral Palsy.

The current preschool building is a temporary makeshift structure

Current preschool building which is not a proper brick structure

The current cramped building can only cater for 33 children (there are many more who would benefit from joining the preschool). Although it is plastered and painted (photo on right), it is not a durable construction. E3 would like to give vulnerable preschool children the best chance in life by building a new preschool to improve their learning environment and increase the number of children to 52.

Revd Wiki Vuyelelwa and his wife Nomzingisi

Revd Wiki Vuyelelwa and his wife Nomzingisi started the preschool 5 years ago as part of their church ministry because there is a lack of early years education locally. They also wanted to cater for children with the same challenges as Revd Wiki – Cerebral Palsy and ADHD. It will be such a blessing and encouragement for them to have a proper preschool building. The church they serve is very poor and Revd Wiki works as a car mechanic to support himself whilst running the church and preschool.

Revd Wiki’s church is part of Fellowship of Believers, a network of 10 churches in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, who work together to bring spiritual and social transformation in their communities.

What happens if the preschool is not built?

  • 52 children now and hundreds in the future will not have the opportunity to go to a safe, comfortable and well-equipped preschool to start their learning journey before primary school.

  • Children are at risk of harm or abuse because they often play outside all day on their own. They would miss out on the stimulation of being in a learning environment and this will make them less likely to succeed at school.

  • Children will not have the chance to start learning to count and enjoy books and to play in a structured way, so they will not be prepared for school.

  • Grandparents will have no time to rest from the exhaustion of bringing up their orphaned grandchildren.

  • Teenage parents will struggle to return and complete school because they will have nowhere for their children to go while they are at school.

Your donation will help change this situation and improve life for many families.

Construction budget – £11,750

A grant from a trust has enabled the building work to start and as funds become available the construction will continue. We hope to finish the project by the end of 2026. We are so grateful for your prayers and donations to help reach this goal.

A note about the toilets:

There will be two pit latrines with proper toilets on top to ensure children’s safety and improve hygiene. The cost covers the foundations, walls, roof and seat sets. There is no plumbing in this community, but having a toilet instead of a long drop hole is a huge improvement.

Ensuring the preschool is sustainable

Parents/guardians will pay a small affordable fee towards the running costs. No one in the community wants to see the preschool fail so they are very supportive of this.
