E3 partner communities in South Africa – context at a glance:
Partner communities in KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Ingwavuma, the Eastern Cape) and one in Cape Town.
Limited opportunities to earn a living: E3 partners are improving livelihoods in isolated rural communities and refugee communities where families live in extreme poverty. There is a high unemployment rate, many households do not have access to water and sanitation
High rates of HIV infection: it was estimated by UNAIDS that the HIV prevalence rate was 17% in 2023, 7.7 million South Africans were living with HIV and 150,000 new infections occurred. HIV education is key to reduce the spread of HIV and ensure people can live positively with the disease.
Improvements to people knowing their status and accessing medication: 95% of people living with HIV know their status but only 77% are on antiretroviral treatment (low compared to the other countries in which E3 works). With proper care, medication and nutritious food, those living with HIV can lead healthy, productive lives well into old age.
Importance of improving life for young people: under 18s make up 34% of South Africa’s population. This figure is much higher in our partner communities.
Challenges for boys and girls: E3 partners are working to encourage and enable children to complete their education. There are 640,000 orphans due to AIDS (aged 0 to 17). AIDS-related illnesses were the leading cause of death among adults for many years, leaving many children not only without parents, but with little or no extended family. Grandmothers are often caring for several of their grandchildren and other orphans.
Gender-based violence: over 30% of 15-49 year old women report recent intimate partner violence. E3 supports partners to raise awareness and support abuse survivors.
